Work Package 1: Co-ordination of the project

Background and objectives
EpiSouth project develops through the synergic collaboration of 8 Working Packages (WPs) which foresee the participation of 9 European Countries and several non-European Countries of the Mediterranean Basin.
In this framework an efficient and efficacious coordination (managing communication process among participating countries, co-ordinating the working groups, facilitating priorities setting, etc.), is needed in order to optimise and enhance the project’s impact.
The project’s coordination is ensured by the Working Package 1 (WP1), which is managed by the main partner (Istituto Superiore di Sanità - ISS) with the two main following objectives:
- To guarantee a high quality performance of the project ensuring that timetables for the completion of works are set and adhered to;
- To ensure the enlargement of the number of non-EU countries and international partners in the EpiSouth project and establish links with appropriate European and International resources.

Methods
The WP1 is managed by the ISS with its dedicated staff. The ISS staff facilitates organisational aspects and communications among all the participants involved and promotes and supports synergy, cohesion and harmony of the WPs’ issues dealt by the project and methods utilised during the project’s implementation.
To this end, the Members’ area of EpiSouth Web site (see WP2) is a valuable and supportive tool for all the needed communications, discussions, documents’ revisions etc.
The ISS staff is technically supported by an executive board (EpiSouth Steering Committee) composed by the project’s partners leaders of the 8 WPs and representatives of the European Commission and other International Institutions as observers (ECDC and WHO).
The Co-ordination of the project drafts annual working plans and interim implementation reports which are shared and discussed with the executive board during dedicated annual meetings and then validated as official project’s documents.
During the final meeting the overall project will be evaluated.
Contacts and procedures have been activated and carried out in order to raise the interest and commitment of non-EU Countries in EpiSouth’s aims and to ensure adequate resources for their active inclusion in the project’s activities.

Expected results
The WP 1 will produce a work-plan for each year and the reports of the issues discussed during the Steering Committee meetings held at the end of year 1, 2 and 3.
Technical and financial reports will be produced at the end of each year of the project.
The Project final Conference proceedings will be produced in collaboration with WP4.
The WP1 will ensure the involvement of non-EU countries of the Mediterranean Basin in the network and in the activities foreseen by EpiSouth Project by securing additional resources from other International Institutions.
